Ramadan Kareem to the UK! (11/09/2009)
The Holy Month of Ramadan is being celebrated in the United Kingdom in the context of new research that reveals that young British Muslims feel much more integrated than their European counterparts. The study was carried out by Lancaster University which surveyed more than 2,500 young Muslims in Britain, France and Germany. The research showed that young British Muslims have lower perceptions of discrimination than in other parts of Europe and have more in common with non-Muslim teenagers, for example reading the same magazines and watching the same TV shows. They also showed a similar disinterest in politics!
Other achievements by British Muslims have further sweetened the Ramadan celebrations and provided further evidence of how Muslims are succeeding in all spheres of British cultural, economic and political life. At the beginning of August, boxer Amir Khan became a new British sporting legend when he became the world light-welterweight champion in a match held in Manchester. Khan became the third-youngest British world champion since the Second World War. Meanwhile, an East London Mosque was nominated for a prestigious national award because of its professional standards in its charity work.
In other recent UK news, plans for the construction of a five storey building which will be one of London's biggest mosques have been given the go ahead. Harrow central mosque will serve Muslim worshippers from across north London when it opens next year. British newspapers also covered an event in the city of Bolton where the Zakariyya Mosque invited the non-Muslim community to take a tour and take part in the Ifrar. A spokesperson for the Mosque said that the event was to promote understanding and harmony in the spirit of Ramadan.
