Our Consul General

Richard Makepeace

Richard Makepeace

Message from Consul-General Mr Richard Makepeace

Welcome to the web site of the British Consulate General in Jerusalem. We provide public services and promote British interests in Jerusalem and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (including through our office in Gaza). With British diplomats around the region and in London we work for progress towards just solutions to regional conflicts.

Our focus here is supporting efforts to create a Palestinian state, based on the 1967 borders, living in peace and security with Israel, with Jerusalem as the capital of two states. While pressing for political progress, we also work with Palestinian partners on the ground to support and develop governmental institutions, and the economy.

The UK is one of the largest donors to Palestine. The Department for International Development (DFID) in Jerusalem support the Palestinian Authority budget and provide relief to refugees (through UNRWA). DFID also manages relief assistance to Gaza. With DFID and UK Trade and Investment we support private sector development.

The British Council works in Jerusalem, Ramallah and Gaza to build ties with Palestinian cultural and educational institutions. We offer Chevening Scholarships and Fellowships to the very best young Palestinians. We are also proud to work with the Kenyon institute in Jerusalem that promotes academic relations.

We also run small projects with youth groups, civil society, sports groups, the sick and the impoverished.  Details of these projects and how to apply for small project funding can be found here. You can watch a short film about the Consulate General online or order a copy for yourself by contacting britain.jerusalem@fco.gov.uk.

We aim to provide an efficient and friendly service to British citizens working and travelling in Jerusalem and the OPTs. More information on what we can (and can't) do here. Please keep up to date with our travel advice, register with us when visiting, and to ensure you have adequate travel insurance for your journey.

Finally, please feel free to leave feedback about the web site.  We want to make it as user-friendly as possible – and for that we need your help and suggestions.
