Department for International Development

Israeli-Palestinian peace remains a top priority for the UK Government. Sustainable poverty reduction and economic growth will only be achieved in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs) if a peaceful solution is secured.

The Department for International Development (DFID) works closely in the OPTs with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and other government departments, to support the establishment of a viable Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel.

The role of aid

International aid underpins the peace process. Aid has helped make the Palestinian Authority (PA) a more effective negotiating partner in the peace talks. It has also helped the PA undertake institutional reforms and state-building activities, critical to a viable future Palestinian state. By contributing to vital reforms and creating the right conditions for economic growth, the UK is helping to build an environment where peace can thrive when the politics allow. In addition, international support – in the form of humanitarian assistance – has helped reduce the impact of movement and access restrictions on the people of Gaza.
